In our society, sex and power are two huge selling points. As you could expect, the examples ranged from hysterical and appropriate to sexual and quite inappropriate. In class on Wednesday, we got to look up subliminal messages and share our favorite ones with the class. This is a hard idea to really grasp and think about…did I make purchasing decisions due to unconscious hidden messages that I didn’t realize were even there? Did certain aspects of any given Ad evoke a connection in my brain that lead me to react somehow? They know how to tap into our unconscious perception of things, slipping in hidden messages that somehow evoke us to think about things without even knowing it. ![]() It is an uneasy thought knowing that other people have some sort of control over us that we don’t even know about. As consumers, we see thousands of Ads EVERY day. One thing is for sure though, in most cases, advertisers mean all of what they put into any Ad. But is this all part of the marketing plan? I guess we will never know. Personally, I think that subliminal messages are sometimes a stretch…people have to really be looking for some of the hidden messages to even start to think they mean something. Although these cannot necessarily be scientifically backed, with the little evidence there is, would you believe that subliminal messages can do that? For example, academics, quitting smoking, boosting learning capacity, and enhancing memory have been attributed to subliminal messages. In addition to the negatives that are argued, there have also been certain aspects of subliminal messages that have had a positive spin. ![]() Are we being taken advantage of? I guess it’s a personal question with differing answers considering subliminal messages are in fact legal. It can become quite the ethical dilemma as many consumers say that it turns into a question of deception and unethical buying persuasion. ![]() From selective perception to selective retention, consumers are often unaware of the messages they are perceiving. Perception, defined by our textbook, is the process by which an individual selects, organizes, and interprets information to create a meaningful picture of the world. Perception is a very interesting influence on consumers. There are also sociocultural influences such as personal influences, reference groups, family influences, social class, culture, and subculture. When marketers think about how to influence consumers they have to consider many of the following pressures:
